Illumination; the act of spiritual or intellectual enlightenment.  On a recent trip to Italy I took a fresh look at spaces and art of churches seeking out design that captured the essence of “Illumination”.  What I am talking about… light? Art?   Well, yes… but more than that, I went looking for that design that uses material, light, art and construction to create the opportunity for an encounter with the great mystery that illuminates our religious life.  The following are some photos of design that I think capture these qualities from the baptistery in Florence and the cathedral in Siena.
